Cybersquatting Plagues Pharmaceutical Brands

Cybersquatting of leading pharmaceutical brands has reached an all-time high, according to the latest BrandJacking Index research by MarkMonitor. Cybersquatting is the registration of domain names containing a brand, slogan or trademark to which the registrant has no right. The enterprise brand protection company found that cybersquatting of drug brands rose 35% for the year. As a result, said MarkMonitor, online consumers are at greater risk from sales of questionable drugs in illicit online pharmacies and business-to-business exchange sites.

Australian diabetics taking the controversial drugs Avandia and Avandamet have been told to have their treatment reviewed after the medications were linked with heart failure and death. More than 30,000 people are taking the two drugs, which were found to double the risk of cardiac failure and mortality in some people in two major studies released last year. Pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced changes to the drugs' guidelines for use, and has urged all patients to see a doctor as soon as possible to discuss their treatment.

EDGEWOOD KY - St. Elizabeth Medical Center launched a program Wednesday that allows its physicians to send prescriptions to pharmacies electronically; the process, known as e-Prescribing. The average paper record costs 75 cents to deliver versus 12 cents for an electronic record. Last year, HealthBridge handled about 26 million records, reducing local health care industry costs by about $16.4 million.
